Chapter Fifteen

THE HOUSE WAS VERY quiet when I went downstairs. It was almost noon. I tried to hide for as long as I could, but hunger pulled at me. Berrion and Sky were in the house. Ares, Radolf, and Hawk were off on patrol.

Kya was just finishing the dishes. “Good morning, or afternoon, I guess.”

“Did Mom come back?”

She winced and looked at Berrion. “She did.”

Something was wrong. “What does that mean, and for the love of all that is holy don’t tell me nothing. No more secrets. If everyone wants me to be straight with them then I’m going to need the same in return.”

Kya gestured for me to sit down. “I need coffee for this.”

“The pot is fresh,” Berrion said. When I looked at him with surprise, he smirked. “Late night, early morning. None of us got a lot of sleep.”

I poured myself a cup and sat down. I dreaded what was coming next. I doubted it was going to be good. “What now?” I asked with a heavy sigh.

Kya sat down. She looked like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. A pit of dread blossomed in my stomach. I felt like I was going to puke. “What happened? Is she okay?”

“She’s fine.”

“Then where in the hell is she?”

“She left.”

“Left?”

“She wasn’t comfortable staying here.”

I shrugged. “Did she find a place in town?”

“No. She left. She didn’t want to stay here anymore.”

“Because of what I did last night?” I asked in horror.

“No, no,” she said and touched my hand. “It wasn’t you. It’s this place.”

“The house?”

“No. The pack doesn’t want her here. She feels the tension. She knows you are struggling with the Decker thing. She doesn’t want to make things worse.”

“So she abandoned me at a time when I needed her. Classic.”

“I know that’s what it feels like, but she isn’t abandoning you. She just worried she was going to be a distraction. She didn’t want to make things harder on you.”

I shook my head. “Whatever. I lived this long without her. I don’t need her.”

“Don’t say that,” Kya said. “She isn’t abandoning you. She didn’t want to leave. She wanted to help, but she didn’t know how she could. She was worried about the pack possibly turning on you.”

“I’m so fucking sick of people trying to do what they think is best for me. I’m not a damn child. I’m not fragile.” I slapped my hands against the table so hard my coffee sloshed over the side of the cup. I walked out of the kitchen and back to my room.

I was hurt. I was shattered. The last thing I wanted was to lose the mother I’d just found. I couldn’t help but think this had to do with the drama from last night. Was she pissed at me? I flopped onto my bed and covered my face. I was not going to cry. Not anymore. She didn’t get to break my heart a second time.

“Azalea?” I heard Berrion say.

I groaned, leaving my face covered.
